ARTIST STATEMENT
I pull the paint around much like I dig for soft shell clams on Cape Cod - digging, scraping, clawing in the muck at low tide until my fingers grasp purchase and begin to pull things up to the surface; and I push the paint much like I garden - I use my hands and various tools to both smooth over and then trench through the freshly turned earth to see what remains and what needs to be destroyed. It is in both of these actions that I open up and simply allow my palette knives and unusual tools to build pathways in the paint creating a gestural and textural landscape that is at once both a welling memory of a place as well as a actual location. I often refer to aerial maps, historic topographic maps and lean on my past studies as a physical geography major to inform my visual language as I like to tell the story of a place from what is both living above and beneath the surface. Themes are present in my works and in addition to my serene Cape Cod inspired seascapes I am working on a series of Granite Quarry paintings called "Split Rock Roads" and rural farming series called "Farm To Table."
