ARTIST STATEMENT

I push oil paint much like I dig for clams - reaching, scraping, clawing in the muck at low tide until my fingers grasp purchase and begin to pull things up to the surface; I pull oil paint much like I dig in the garden - planting, watering, patting down the freshly turned earth and then wait to see what grows. It is in both of these actions that I open up my awareness to the beauty that is around me and simply allow my palette knife and garden tools to build pathways in the paint creating a textural landscape that is at once both a welling memory of a place as well as a actual location.  I often refer to aerial maps, historic topographic maps and lean on my past studies as a physical geography major to inform my visual language as I like to tell the story of a place from what is both living above as well as beneath the surface and its very unique and transitioning topography. Themes are present in my works and in addition to my Cape Cod inspired seascapes I am currently working on a series of Granite Quarry paintings I refer to as "Split Rock Roads" and rural farming series I refer to as "Farm To Table."
